Overview
Our R&D Mission is to create shareholder value through research and development in technologies that expand Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) market applications, enhance the DFC value proposition, support next generation product development such as planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) or yield relevant Intellectual Property for license or sale. Our R&D efforts focus on existing Programs and also targeted development areas we call R&D Thrust Areas.
FuelCell Energy has been developing fuel cell technology since our founding in 1969. In addition to our current commercial products, we continue to develop our next generation of carbonate and hybrid fuel cell products as well as SOFC and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM) technology supported by internal and government research and development funds.
Since 1975 we have led the development of the Direct FuelCell and advanced fuel cell technology with support from the U.S. Government, including the Department of Energy, the Navy, the Army, the Coast Guard, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, as well as numerous commercial development partners. We have established FCE's world-class fuel cell technology development capabilities by building a cadre of dedicated researchers. Their technical leadership has been the foundation for FCE’s dual role leading the commercialization of the DFC and the exploration of exciting new advanced fuel cell technologies.
As the world leader in stationary fuel cell development, we have established a powerful Intellectual Property portfolio including U.S. and international patents intended to protect critical areas of our technology from infringement and to allow unhindered production of our commercial products as we continuously improve our technology and manufacturing know-how. The FCE patent portfolio is constantly being updated with newly granted patents and publication of new applications.
